Attribution

This work should be attributed to Jacobus Gallus, a contemporary of Victoria.

There is a manuscript of this work available.

For the 2003 article that attributes this work to Gallus: see this link: Gallus and the mystery of authorship

 Help

Thank you for pointing this out. The documentation is persuasive as far as I'm concerned.

The score page for Ave Maria a 4 by Victoria now has a notation about the misattribution that points to this discussion page. I am adding a pointer on the Jacobus Gallus composer page for the Ave Maria a 4 and creating a redirect to point to this score page. I would welcome feedback about whether the redirect should point the other way, but it seems strange to move scores that the score editors attributed to Victoria on the scores themselves. I've also posted in the forums to get opinions about whether the redirects should be reversed.

Per further discussion, I've moved the page for the Ave Maria a 4 to live under Jacob Handl's name, with the Victoria Ave Maria a 4 simply serving as a redirect for it.

Errors in all uploaded versions

All versions, which have been uploaded as yet, are faulty. Here a summary list of mistakes:

  • sometimes no leading note
  • ending must be on a major chord after cadence/clausula, not minor (minor endings are untypical for the 16th century (Renaissance). First in Baroque, e. g. at J. S. Bach, can be the last chord in minor).
  • some wrong Tenor clausulae sfuggitae instead of Tenor clausula formalis/regularis (go to the third; conventional Tenor clausulae lead to the fundamental tone (root))

I will revise this sheet and upload a correct version. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ascomu (talkcontribs) on 08:26, 11 June 2011 .
