Clefs and tempo
I'm not familiar with this piece, but if it's really SATB, then the clefs are wrong. S and A should have \clef treble, and T should have \clef "G_8". Also in the MIDI output, the voices are in the wrong octaves.
In addition, the MIDI output is insanely fast. On the other hand, the tempo of the 3/2 section should be faster than that of the 4/4 section - or should it be 2/2? -- Hwellmann 10:25, 26 October 2006 (PDT)
Clefs and tempo
I'm familiar with this piece, but not with lilypond :-( It's the first piece I wrote, and you can see it...
For what concerns the midi, I thought I would upload a better version when I had learnt how to change the tempo inside the piece, and I will do it immediately if you can suggest me how.
For the clefs, I was quite stupid...
First error: the piece has a C with a bar (2/2, right?), not simply a C.solved Second error: I was searching for a way to not add all those iphens after notes on women voices, I found the "\clef G_8" thing and I thought "wonderful, it transposes"... I absolutely didn't notice the little "8" under the clef...found the "transpose" command Third error: the first part I wrote was the tenor one (since I'm a tenor)... and I still didn't know che "\clef G_8" trick...corrected If you can suggest me a way to tell at once to push up/down by an octave every note of a section, I will immediately do it.
If there's no way, and I just have to add hiphens, I will do it in few days.

Fine, the clefs and the octaves are ok now. You also may want to try out relative notation and automatic bar lines.
The midi tempo can be fixed by \tempo commands, e.g. \tempo 2 = 80 for the 2/2 sections and \tempo 2 = 120 for the 3/2 sections. To suppress tempo markings in the printout, use
\override Score.MetronomeMark #'transparent = ##t

Lyrics and Hyphens
Regarding the lyrics, have a look at the Lilypond manual on lyrics and melismata.
The way you did it, the hyphens are treated like (parts of) words. You should use a double hyphen '--', enclosed by whitespace, to separate syllables. Lilypond will then print as many hyphens as required, maybe none.
Melismata are handled automatically if you use legato slurs, e.g.
c (d e). If you don't want the slurs in the printout, use
\melisma and \melismaEnd. To save typing, I usually define
bm = \melisma em = \melismaEnd
and then work with \bm and \em.
