Biography

Maria Theresa Stonehouse was born Mary Crispe, but became an orphan at the age of six. She was brought up by her grandmother at Tollington. There as a young woman she heard the gospel from Rev. George Stonehouse (1714-1793), and later decided to marry him, "contrary to the will of her relations; who persecuted her on account of he being united to a Methodist." They were married on June 1, 1739, and shortly thereafter met James Hutton, and through him was introduced to Count Nicolaus Zinzendorf, who adopted and renamed her. She was a deaconess in the Moravian churches in Chelsea and London, and died shortly after giving birth.
