1. Leis wandeln wir wie Geisterhauch
zu deinem stillen Grabe hin.
Wir wandeln hin bei Sternenglanz,
und bringen dir den Totenkranz
von Rosmarin und Immergrün.

2. Der Wehmut Zähre netzt das Aug'.
Du flohst empor zum Sternenland,
sagt unser Seufzer halb erstickt,
und jedes Bruders Auge blickt
wehmütig auf zum Sternenland.

3. Leis seufzend hebt sich uns're Brust;
entflohn bist du der Erde schon.
Dein Herz war edel, groß und rein,
du kannst dich deiner Aussaat freun
an des Erhabnen Sonnenthron.

4. Am Grab des Edlen weht es nicht,
wie um des Sünders schauerlich;
da weht's so sanft, so friedlich mild
nicht einsam, bang und schauerlich:
wie Duft aus Edens Blumgefild.

Time's rapid wing finds here no rest,
But ever, ever onward flies;
And whether life with care is pressed,
Or with a thousand joys is blest,
Man hastens on until he dies.

But to the last, while life endures,
Hope lights him on in bright array,
And while the starry light allures,
Faith in his God to him assures,
That there will come a brighter day.
