Lutheran Eucharist hymn, in hymnbooks indicated as Tisch gesang nach dem Essen or Gratiarum actio mensae. The text is anonymously given in the earliest hymn books, and usually attributed to Nikolaus Selnecker.
It appears that the fourth stanza is of a different choral (attributed to Johann Agricola). Several 17th century settings do not include this stanza.
As tune it uses a medieval troubadour song "Mein freud möcht sich wohl", one of the songs in the Lochamer Liederbuch. The tune was selected by Elisabeth Creuziger for Herr Christ der einig Gottes sohn'mid-15c).
1. Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset,
Wir sag'n dir großen Dank.
Du hast uns wohl gespeiset,
Gegeb'n ein'n guten Trank.
Dein' Mildigkeit zu merken
Und unsern Glaub'n zu stärken,

1. O God in heaven we praise Thee
And yield Thee gratitude
For all Thy generous bounty,
For all our daily food,

By Thee, our loving Lord.

Our appetites should tempt,
