Biography

Salesian priest, he began as self-taught in the religious house of Foglizzo Canavese; in 1899 he had the opportunity to attend some lessons of Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum of S. Gervais and to follow the following year a six-month course at the School of Regensburg where they taught Haller, Haberl and Renner. From 1893 he occupied the position of organist and choirmaster in the church of S. Giovanni Evangelista di Torino. In 1923 he also became an organ teacher in the local musical high school "G. Greens". A prolific composer he composed Masses, litanies, pieces for organ. He has reduced classical polyphonic music and the "Songs of Passion" for the function of the agony of Jesus (from 4 voices mixed to 2 equal voices) by J. Rheinberger. Very common for its usefulness The very easy accompaniment (with preludi, interludi, postludi) to the songs of the Parish singer (STEN Editrice). The irregular, but certainly cosmopolitan musical formation led Pagella to stand out in the panorama of his contemporary authors. In 1931 "I Maestri dell'Organo" of Casa Carrara, presenting it to his readers, wrote about him: "... he is one of the strongest modern contrapuntists, he combines a formidable possession of the technique, a deep and very personal inspiration, which is revealed through a vast production in all genres of musical composition. "In fact, they included in his catalog vocal and instrumental music, church, concert and theater, small and large, humble and ambitious, .. all characterized by skilful processing, from noble melody, from an unusual variety of rhythms, from mastery of counterpoint and refined harmonic chiselling.
