1. Was will die einsame Träne?
Sie trübt mir ja den Blick.
Sie blieb aus alten Zeiten
In meinem Auge zurück.

2. Sie hatte viel leuchtende Schwestern,
Die alle zerflossen sind,
Mit meinen Qualen und Freuden
Zerflossen in Nacht und Wind.

3. Wie Nebel sind auch zerflossen
Die blauen Sternelein,
Die mir jene Freuden und Qualen
Gelächelt ins Herz hinein.

4. Ach, meine Liebe selber
Zerfloss wie eitel Hauch!
Du alte, einsame Träne,
Zerfließe jetzunder auch!

  English.png English translation

by Emma Lazarus (1849-1887)

1. What means this lonely tear-drop
That blurs my troubled sight,
From olden times returning
Back to mine eyes to-night?

2. Its many glimmering sisters
Are vanished long ago,
In the night and the wind thy vanished
With all my joy and my woe.

3. And like the mists of evening
Did those blue stars depart,
That smiled all joys and sorrows
Into my trusting heart.

4. Alas! my love, too, melted
Like idle breath one day;
Oh lingering, lonely tear-drop,
Thou also fade away!

  French.png French translation

by Georges Clerc

 1. Se peut-il qu'une larme vienne
 Obscurcir encore mon regard?
 La pauvrette arrive en retard:
 C'est déjà de l'histoire ancienne.

 2. Que de soeurs elle eut autrefois!
 Maintenant qui se souvient d'elles?
Mon amour a fermé ses ailes
Et le vent a couvert sa voix

 3. Comme flotte au ciel une brume
 Sans ternir son azur vainqueur,
Peine et joie au fond de mon coeur
 N'ont jamais laissé d'amertume.

 4. Pauvre larme, ô dernier adieu
 De l'amour des jeunes années,
Le soleil a bu tes ainées:
Rejoins-les dans le grand ciel bleu.
