54833Jason Smart2020-06-302020-06-30Edited from the two surviving sixteenth-century sources. Robert Dow’s set of partbooks is the only source to preserve all the voices of Parsons’s motet. Unfortunately Dow’s text is unreliable, as he was prone to alter the underlay and note values of the music he copied to suit his taste. The other source, a single partbook from an otherwise lost set, is more trustworthy. It reveals some of the ways in which Dow altered Parsons’s music and, where Dow was inconsistent, which of his alternative readings are correct: see the critical commentary appended to the score. This partbook forms the basis of this edition and its readings are extrapolated to the other parts to return the underlay and note values to a state closer to Parsons’s lost original.5368Ave Maria (Robert Parsons)Ave MariaRobert Parsons2023-12-28 16:32:50
